Responsible Play Policy

Last Updated: January 1, 2026. Explore our formal framework regarding user safety, session time guidelines, and helplines support.

1. Purpose and Scope

This Responsible Play Policy outlines GoPlay Alberta's official commitment to providing a balanced, secure, and healthy online environment. Our goal is to encourage digital entertainment as a fun leisure activity for adults, while preventing the development of problematic habits. This policy applies to all registered members, visitors, and support agents operating on GoPlayAlberta.com.

2. Our Core Safety Pillars

We coordinate our user safety efforts around three key operating pillars:

  • Education: Providing members with statistics on session hours, guidelines for recognizing problematic habits, and tips for balanced leisure.
  • User Controls: Building self-exclusion toggles, customizable session hour caps, and alert intervals directly into the profile dashboard.
  • External Support: Ensuring active, clickable links to certified helplines like Alberta Health Services and Problem Gambling Helpline.

3. Balanced Play Guidelines

We expect all members of our community to practice self-control and read the following recommendations:

  • — Set time budgets (e.g. 1 hour per day) before launching any game session.
  • — Do not prioritize digital activities over family, work, health, or sleep.
  • — Keep in mind that score counters and rewards points are purely virtual and hold no real cash value.
  • — Take regular physical breaks, stand up, and look away from screen displays.

4. Technical Self-Limit Systems

GoPlay Alberta offers server-enforced limits. When a user defines a limit (e.g. 5 hours weekly), the server logs the total session duration. Once exceeded, the user's active session is suspended, and the account is locked from logging in until the next timing cycle begins. Increases in limits are delayed by 24 hours to enforce cooling off.

5. Self-Exclusion Protocol

Members can initiate self-exclusion from 24 hours up to permanent account termination. Once active, the exclusion cannot be bypassed, and support agents are contractually barred from reopening the profile early. All marketing lists are updated automatically within 1 hour to block materials distribution to excluded profiles.

6. Helpline Contacts (Alberta, Canada)

If you require confidential guidance or counseling services, please contact these toll-free resources:

  • AHS Mental Health Helpline: 1-877-303-2642
  • Alberta Problem Gambling Helpline: 1-866-332-2322

7. Policy Audits and Revisions

This policy is reviewed annually by our operations curators to ensure alignment with Canadian mental health guidelines, PIPA data security rules, and WCAG accessibility targets. Feedback is welcome via: support@goplayalberta.com.
